This engaging CLE program, sponsored by the Trial Advocacy Institute, explores the realities behind jury selection across civil and criminal proceedings in state court. Through a dynamic panel discussion and live demonstrations showing voir dire in action, participants will examine the strategies lawyers use when evaluating potential jurors—and whether those strategies truly aim to achieve fairness. The program will address practical and ethical considerations, implicit bias, and the balance between advocacy and impartiality. Attendees will gain valuable insights into effective jury selection techniques, as well as the broader impact these choices have on trial outcomes.Following the panel discussion, two live demonstrations of jury selections will be conducted: one focusing on civil proceedings in state court, and the other focusing on criminal proceedings in state court. The panelists and the presenters leading each live demo are highly experienced judges and trial attorneys who will specifically address and demonstrate voir dire in the field in which they are experienced. Drawing on real-world experience, presenters will address and demonstrate techniques applicable to both civil and criminal proceedings in state and federal courts, including how to structure your narrative, highlight key facts, and avoid common pitfalls. Following the panel discussion, two live demonstrations focusing on crafting and giving opening statements will be conducted: one on civil proceedings in state and federal courts, and the other focusing on criminal proceedings in state and federal courts.
